Sarabjit Singh dies

Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh died of cardiac arrest in aLahore hospital in the wee hours on Thursday after being comatose for nearly a week following a brutal assault by fellow inmates in a high-security Pakistani jail, officials said.
"I received a call from the doctor on duty (at Jinnah Hospital) at 1am (1:30 IST) informing me that Sarabjit is no more," Mahmood Shaukat, the head of a medical board that was supervising 49-year-old Sarabjit's treatment, told.
Another doctor, who was part of the team treating Sarabjit, said he died of cardiac arrest, adding that doctors made several unsuccessful attempts to resuscitate him.

Officials of the Indian high commission in Islamabad said they had been informed by officials of Jinnah Hospital about Sarabjit's death.
Sarabjit sustained severe injuries when at least six prisoners attacked him in a barrack at Kot Lakhpat Jail on Friday, hitting him on the head with bricks.
In New Delhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed sadness over Sarabjit's death, saying criminals responsible for the barbaric and murderous attack on the Indian national must be brought to justice.
Sarabjit was convicted of alleged involvement in a string of bomb attacks in Punjab province that killed 14 people in 1990 and spent about 22 years in Pakistani prisons.
His family, who had just returned to India after visiting him in Jinnah hospital, always insisted Sarabjit was innocent and he had inadvertently strayed across the border in an inebriated state.
His mercy petitions were rejected by the courts and former President Pervez Musharraf.
The previous Pakistan People's Party-led government put off Sarabjit's execution for an indefinite period in 2008.
Sarabjit's heart was beating "but without brain function" because of the extensive head injuries he sustained during the assault. He was completely unresponsive and unable to breathe without ventilator support.
Shaukat said authorities were yet to decide on conducting an autopsy on Sarabjit's body.
Asked whether the autopsy would be done after getting permission from the government, he said: "At the moment I have no idea.
No decision had been made about handing over the body to Sarabjit's kin or to Indian authorities, Shaukat said.
"These matters will be worked out according to the directions from the government," he said.
The official sources in Lahore had yesterday said Sarabjit had slipped into a "non-reversible" coma and this could lead to "brain death".
His measurements on the Glasgow Coma Scale, which indicates the levels of consciousness and damage to a person's central nervous system, had dropped to a "critical level", the sources said.
Police have booked two death row prisoners? Amer Aftab and Mudassar ? for the attack on Sarabjit. They reportedly told investigators that they had attacked Sarabjit because he had allegedly carried out bomb attacks in Lahore.
No action has been taken so far against officials of the jail for failing to provide adequate security to Sarabjit.
Following the rapid deterioration in Sarabjit's condition, New Delhi had requested that he be immediately released so that he could be treated in India or a third country.
Pakistan had said it was "positively considering" the request to repatriate Sarabjit.
Prime Minister Singh today said the Indian government will make arrangements to bring Sarabjit's remains home and for his last rites to be conducted in consultation with his family.

Fish can be a baking delight!

One of the best ways to enjoy fish is to bake it. Unfortunately, we overdo the fish, either overcooking it in a curry or leaving it swamped in a marinade and then proceeding to fry it.

But when it comes to baking, the fish flesh lends itself wonderfully to the process, retaining moisture in the bite and leaving in the flavours. Here are tips on this healthy alternative way of cooking it...

Choosing the fish: The fish needs to be fresh and often a whole fish is preferred. However, you might bake fillets too, if required.

Baking white fish: The flesh of white fish is very delicate and therefore, the spices and herbs used during baking must also be minimal.

Using a foil: Though this is a slightly lengthy process (the time taken to cook a whole fish in foil is almost twice as long as a single fillet), one of the nicest ways is to bake it in a foil. This not only retains the moisture but also can infuse fish with the ingredients that you are adding. The only things to remember here are to first ensure that the fish is cleaned inside and out and the body cavity is well stuffed with herbs, ginger, garlic etc.

On a bed of vegetables: Here, the flavour of the vegetables gets infused into the fish. To start with, you marinate the fish with your crushed garlic, greens, lime juice, coriander leaves, salt and olive oil (use herbs, too). Line the baking tray with onions, peppers, carrots and potatoes and sprinkle it with lime juice. Place the fish on top of this and drizzle olive oil on it to keep it moist. Add the herbs and spices. Bake uncovered in the oven.

Recipe: Easy baked Mackerel
Ingredients:
Fillets — 2
Olive oil
Salt
Thyme — 1 tsp, chopped
Ginger — one small piece, grated
Lemon slices
Parsley — a little

Method:
- Preheat the oven at 200 degrees.
- Remove the bones from the mackerel fillet and brush olive oil over it.
- Season with salt and pepper.
- Make cuts in the mackerel and push lime, herbs and ginger into them.
- Line baking tray with a baking sheet and place fillets in them, skin-side up.
- Bake the fillets in the oven for 20 minutes or until skin is crisp.
- Serve on a bed of baked baby potatoes with lemon wedges.

Shaan’s Grilled fish in garlic butter sauce

Is being fed Farex and Cerelac in a steel bowl by my mother.

My favourite dish

It has to be grilled fish with garlic butter sauce.

My lunch comprises

I am not a rice person. So I normally stick to light meals — rotis, vegetables, dal. But I need atleast one non-veg dish with my meal.
On a date I love to eat

My wife and I normally love having seafood when we go out. So normally it is either Italian or Chinese, maybe some calamaris or prawns.
My most romantic dinner till date
Was in Istanbul in Turkey. It was a restaurant overlooking the Blue Mosque where my wife and I had gone for a late lunch. The lunch was perfect with some grilled dish and red wine.
The country that serves heavenly food

I think Thailand has the best food to offer. Whenever we've gone to Thailand, I've thoroughly enjoyed the food there.
I am not a great cook

Once I tried making tea for my guruji, but it turned out so bad that he did not even take a sip. He waited for my wife to come back home and make a cup of tea for him!
One thing I miss the most from my mom's kitchen

Ever since my mom stopped entering the kitchen, I miss her 'macher jholbhaat'made with eggplant, potatoes and bori.

How to poach eggs for breakfast

If you love eggs, then this one's for you! Chhavi Sachdev, communications consultant and radio journalist, shares her version of healthy poachedeggs with HealthMeUp. She mentions two methods of preparing poached eggs - in a microwave or over the stove. Let's check them out. Over to Chhavi's healthy poached egg recipes...

Shortcut "poached" eggs - microwave version:

You need: A microwave, a microwave safe small bowl/ramekin, an egg.

-Break the egg into the ramekin and puncture the surface with a fork, swirl it around without breaking the yolk. You need the membrane to be porous or you will have an egg explosion inside your oven, which will stink and is a pain to clean up.

-Nuke for 30 seconds on 50% power. If you can't figure this out, just nuke on full power for 20 seconds.

-Wait 3 seconds. Repeat nuking for 30/20 seconds.

-Wait 3 more seconds. Ignore any noises inside the microwave. Repeat nuking.

-If you like your egg yolk hard, do it one more time.

-Use a wet knife to get the perfectly rounded 'poached' egg out of the ramekin on to your waiting English muffin.

Shortcut "poached" eggs - stovetop version:

You need: A metal bowl, a saucepan with 200 ml of water heating in it (lid preferable), egg.

-Set saucepan with water on stove, on full heat till boils.

-Break egg into the metal bowl. I dab one drop of oil in it to make the egg removal easier

-Put the metal bowl into the saucepan with the water, reduce heat to simmer

-Cover, let the steam do it's job.

-Peek in about 3 minutes in. switch off when yolk is at the colour/hardness you require.

-Use a "pakkad" or tongs to get the metal bowl out, and a wet knife to slide the egg out on to your toast.

And there you have it - a simple, no-fuss, healthy method of poaching eggs with what you have in the kitchen. Try it out and tell us how it went!

Philip Kotler's 5 marketing & B-school mantras for India

> Offer good products to core consumers.

> The number of innovations one has seen in this country is great. One of these is sachet packaging. At one time, they (Indian marketers) were also selling one cigarette at a time.

> India has great ideas on how to make products affordable. If they (companies here) can figure out how to bring costs down, they can sell a lot more TVs and phones.

Mistakes by Indian marketers

> The basic mistake some make is not knowing how to engage with customers' beliefs, values, needs and aspirations.

> Sometimes marketers fail to segment effectively. They've got to decide what type of consumers they are looking for.

> If marketers are in a service industry, they need to stay focused on employees, sales force - these people are the ones who deliver to consumers.

> They need to be aware of new channels of communication - there's always this danger of complacency. They are not asking enough - can our product message be disrupted by changing technology?

What marketers can do to make a global impact

> Right now there aren't Indian brands that are truly global. You can say Tata, but the average American doesn't know a Tata Nano (but again, Americans are insular). I believe Asia will spawn a lot of brands that will become global.

> Isn't it interesting that some of the smallest countries in the world have the most brands, like Switzerland. Yet they are able to create the brands differently.

> Many people say marketers are just promoters. But they are the ones who can segment, target, position brands.

> I want marketers to be proactive, not just reactive. An interesting example is that of the old GM - they made a car but didn't know who it was for. That's not good. Every good brand should start with a concept. Once that happens, the advertiser already knows what to say... he has to only figure out how to say it. Globally, Unilever and Nestle really know what to do or what to say.

What Indian B-schools are not teaching

> The IIM and IIT curriculums are pretty much state of art.

> But I hope they would get into more entrepreneurial and innovative classes, instead of teaching only managerial business.

Philip Kotler's 5 marketing & B-school mantras for India

A quick chicken sandwich or burger is ideal when you are pressed for time and do not want to compromise on quality and taste

Cheesy chicken burger
Ingredients:
3 boneless skinless chicken breast halves, (thawed and cut in half)
1/3 cup salsa
6 cheese slices
6 hamburger buns
1/3 cup ranch dressing
6 lettuce leaves

Method:
In a vessel, take some oil and heat it. Add chicken and cook for 5 to 7 minutes. Once it's cooked well, remove from heat. Top with salsa and cheese and cover. Let it rest 2 minutes. Meanwhile, spread bottom halves of buns with dressing. Fill buns with lettuce and chicken.

BBQ chicken burger

4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
Salt and pepper to taste
1 onion (finely chopped)
4 cloves garlic (finely chopped)
1 1/3 cups barbecue sauce
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
Hot pepper sauce
6 French rolls, split
1-1/2 cups shredded cheese

Method:
Season the chicken with salt and pepper and place in a heavy pot with the onion, garlic and just enough water to cover. Add the barbecue sauce, vinegar and a few drops hot sauce and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer until the chicken is cooked through, about 15 minutes. Remove the chicken from the sauce and shred with two forks. Boil the sauce, skimming occasionally, until reduced by half, about 15 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Add the shredded chicken and heat through. Place the mixture onto the rolls and top with the cheese.

Using emotional intelligence in team management is a skill managers aspire to, but not many are good at it.
1. Listen and acknowledge

Have small sessions with team members on their interests and motivations “Ask team members how they ‘feel’, especially in an emotionally charged situation,”

2. Show you care

Wish team members on important dates, check on the health of their loved ones, ask them how their weekends went, but be genuine. It will gain the team’s trust,

3. Cultivate self-control

Don’t shoot your mouth off, or act on impulse. Emotional resilience includes self-control, says Sudhir Dhar, head – HR, Motilal Oswal Financial Services.

4. Use social influencing

Why should team members listen to you? “You should have social influencing skills to manage your team,” says Dhar. Take leadership courses that will help you gain acceptance and assert your authority.

5. Decipher body language

People often say more through body language than words. Practise the art of understanding what people mean through gestures, eye contact and so on. As an exercise, visualise yourself as a team member and figure out how he or she would respond to a particular question. Then actually ask the person the question and see how close you were to guessing the response, suggests Sisodia.

Drinking a glass of orange juice a day can keep your skin glowing and keep cold away. Orange juice is known to contain a high percentage ofVitamin C, which is helpful in boosting the immune system.

So, you will be less likely to catch various illnesses, such as cold or flu. Also, medical studies show that orange juice may help lower both cholesterol and blood pressure levels.

What's your squeeze?
Don't mix sugar with orange juice. Always remember that you do not need to drink a whole lot of orange juice in order to get these healthy benefits. In fact, since orange juice is fairly high in calories, avoid drinking too much of the stuff. If you are drinking canned orange juice, then be sure to check the sugar content on the label when choosing orange juice if you really want to get the highest amount of health benefits from your orange juice and, ultimately, prevent weight gain (since high sugar levels can cause it).

Pulp fiction
It is often said that orange juice containing pulp tends to be healthier for the body, but it is an issue that is often debated. If you have a stomach condition, remember that orange juice is very acidic and for that reason, it may cause a stomach upset. Due to its acidity, orange juice can also cause tooth damage , if left uncared for.

Why you should drink orange juice

How to buy sunscreen lotion

Choosing a sunscreen isn't a child's play. After rummaging through shelves of creams at shopping malls one often thinks if sunscreen lotions are actually effective.

When you are in the sun, especially during summers over exposure to the sunrays can cause wrinkles, tanning, and age spots.

When you buy a sunscreen, do not go on 'word of mouth'; what suits your friend may not suit you. Sunscreen lotions have two functions - sunscreen shields us from the sun's dangerous ultraviolet (UV) rays in two ways. Some work by scattering the light, reflecting it away from your body. Others absorb the UV rays before they reach your skin.

So don't get fooled by fancy brands and creative marketing, follow these pointers given by dermatologist, Dr Swati Srivastava, Sketch Clinics, Mumbai.

Any sunscreen that is labelled SPF 15 or above SPF 15 is fine for Indian skin. Buy a sunscreen that offers a broad spectrum - UVA + UVB. Here UVA stands for Ultra Violet A - is a long wave sun ray that penetrates deep into the skin, while UVB is Ultra Violet B is a short wave. A sunscreen with SPF 15 gives 94-95% UVB coverage, SPF 28 gives you 96% coverage.

According to skincancer.org, "UVA rays account for up to 95 percent of the UV radiation reaching the Earth's surface. Although they are less intense than UVB, UVA rays are 30 to 50 times more prevalent. UVB, the chief cause of skin reddening and sunburn, tends to damage the skin's more superficial epidermal layers. It plays a key role in the development of skin cancer and a contributory role in tanning and photo aging."

Sunscreen contains various compounds to fight harmful sun's rays:

UVA Sunscreen ingredients- Avobenzone , oxybenzone , Mexoryl SX

UVB Sunscreen Ingredients- Titanium dioxide, Zinc oxid

Remember to buy a sunscreen that is PABA free, fragrance free , noncomedogenic & hypoallergenic.

These are the tips to follow while applying sunscreen:

- In case of oily skin buy a sunscreen that is water based.
- If you go swimming, use a water resistant sunscreen.
- The sensitive skin of babies and children is easily irritated by chemicals in adult sunscreens, so avoid sunscreens with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and benzephenones like dioxybenzone, oxybenzone, or sulisobenzone.

Happy summer!

Skin Care in summer

Cast: Ajay Devgn, Tamannah, Paresh Rawal, Mahesh Manjrekar,
Direction: Sajid Khan
Genre: Action
Duration: 2 hours 20 minutes

Story: Himmatwala returns to his gaon to avenge his baap's death. Here he meets sher, sherni, maa, behen and other assorted creatures.

Movie Review: Hark back to taaki taaki and tap dance to tathaiyya as the (r)awful 80s are re-awakened from their garish grave and served re-heated; as old wine in an old bottle. Vintage? Not truly. Just as we thought Jeetendra's white shoes and coloured wigs were laid to rest in filmi museums, Sajid Khan dips into his cookie jar of movies, masti and 'naus-talgia' for yet another peek into the petty-past. Got himmat? Read on:

After years, Ravi aka Himmatwala, a big-city street-fighter, (Ajay) moves back to his village that's suffering the ruthless reign of Sher Singh (Mahesh). Singh terrifies the gaonwallahs by day, and sleeps with a sherni at night (a stuffed toy-tiger, before you Tiger Savers wake up). His bro-in-law Narayandas (Rawal, sporting a Goldilocks wig in grey) with a Kader Khan hangover (nicely done) is his partner-in-paap. While Himmatwala is on a revenge mission (maa kasam!), he falls in love with sher-ki-beti, Rekha, (Tamannah); who's a chori with most guts and the sexiest ghaaghra-cholis. Well, there's more melodrama: A weepy maa in white, a bechari behen (yes, she gets molested too); a gaon-ka-mandir (crucial to the climax. Hail 80s!) plus tons of dialogue-baazi (maa-ka-doodh, maa-behen ki kasam, et al). Lastly, Himmatwala also braves it with a Sher (thankfully not Singh, the real thing).

Ajay bends iron rods, fights tiger claws and takes the laws into his singham paws. Too much, huh? Well, that's our Himmatwala - 100% filmi! With bone-crushing action, power-packed dialogues and perfected herogiri - Ajay stays true to the title and does well. In her Bollywood debut, Tamannahmakes a decent impression. She's superhot (her midriff demands a separate acting credit) and shows conviction, but later gets lost in transgression.Paresh Rawal entertains in parts, but often goes OTT. Thankfully, Mahesh Manjrekar's acting doesn't time travel and he evokes a few laughs.

In this remake, Sajid Khan's passion for the 80s kitsch is entertaining to begin with, but gets suffocating after a point. While few scenes (grand and outlandish) win ceetees, the rest try too hard to get any reaction. He also attempts 'Nazi'jokes, gay-gags and revisits Alfred Hitchcock's 'Psycho'(we braved this too!).

This one might impress the wannabe Himmatwalas out there. But it'll take more than himmat to go back to the gawdiest era of all. Rest, as they say, is history. Repeated!

Today, with the help of Dr. K.M. Sunesara - General Physician, Mumbai, we bring you 20 little investments for good health. Follow these simple health investments for a better and healthier lifestyle...

Little investments for hood health # 1: Health insurance

Step one for healthy living; buy health insurance, if you don't have one. You definitely need to add health care insurance in your life, right away - says Dr. Sunesara. Health insurance is extremely important for all of us, as we never know when health will take a hit. Health insurance will help avoid sudden and huge cash flow issues that may lead to bankruptcy.

Little investments for hood health # 2: Health check-ups

After you have taken up insurance, make sure you maintain good health by going for regular health check-ups. A health check up consists of a series of tests that are designed to check if you are on the right health track. The basic goal of a health check up is to find the hidden disease in your body, prevent it from building, and lower its effect on your body. Health checkups have several advantages. By taking up regular health checkups, you are increasing your lifespan by improving your health and preventing it from deteriorating.

Little investments for hood health # 3: Fruits

Fruits provide various health benefits. Fruits are loaded with nutrients which are important for the good maintenance of your body and health. Hence, make sure you don't forget to buy fruits daily and consume them regularly. Dr. Sunsara says - the cheapest fruit available is banana, even eating one banana a day will provide significant benefits to your health.

Little investments for hood health # 4: Sufficient carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are the body's main source of energy and also rich sources of fibre and other nutrients, which help reduce certain types of cancer, diabetes and coronary heart disease. Invest in a constant supply of complex cereal carbohydrates and vegetable, pulses, bean carbohydrates in your diet.

Little investments for hood health # 5: Healthy breakfast

Make sure that you invest in a good and healthy breakfast every day. A good healthy breakfast is the key to good health. A nourishing breakfast helps to fuel your body and helps to improve your performance throughout the day. Besides, it also helps you to maintain your weight, as it helps you avoid over-eating.

Little investments for hood health # 6: Healthy oil consumption

Invest in healthy oils like Olive oil, Coconut oil, Canola oil, etc. Avoid oils that are refined and heavily processed. Healthy oil consumption is the very foundation of a healthy meal plan. Without controlled and healthy oil consumption your plans of healthy eating are incomplete.

Little investments for hood health # 7: Good oral equipment

Change tooth brushes, tongue cleaners and other oral care equipment frequently and as recommended by your dentist. When a tooth brush is used for a longer duration, it loses efficiency to clean the surface effectively. Hence, invest in a good quality toothbrush and other oral equipment regularly. Besides, invest in good dental floss and fluoride toothpastes.

Little investments for hood health # 8: U.V. sunglasses

Invest in good quality and U.V. protected sunglasses for the outdoors. A good pair of sunglasses won't just accentuate your looks but also protect your eyes from sun damage. Eyes are very sensitive, especially to harsh sunlight. Hence, don't save money to buy cheap sunglasses that are merely tinted plastic or glass. Buy good long lasting sunglasses that will protect your eyes.

Little investments for hood health # 9: Good mattress

A good night's sleep is very essential for healthy living. For a good and pain-free sleeping experience, invest in a firm and good mattress. A good foamy mattress will ensure that you feel relaxed come bed-time and avoid unnecessary back pains and constant awakenings.

Little investments for hood health # 10: Sunscreen

Invest in a good sunscreen, that will keep your skin protected when you venture outdoors. Choose a sunscreen that is at least 15 SPF. A good SPF count helps block ultraviolet B rays, which cause sunburn. A good sunscreen also helps to shield important proteins like collagen and keratin.

Little investments for hood health # 11: Buy an exercise mat

Buy an exercise mat not just to practise yoga when you feel like it, but also for a good stretching programme to aid your routine workouts. A good, personal exercise mat will help you keep things hygienic even at the gym as you will be able to keep it clean yourself. Moreover, when things get monotonous with other workouts, you can rely on your exercise mat for some home workout exercises, which may include yoga poses, push ups, crunches etc.

Little investments for hood health # 12: Treat yourself to a spa

Occasionally, treat yourself at a spa or go for a nice body massage. A good body massage will help you de-stress and iron out the kinks in your back, neck, quads, and glutes, leaving you refreshed and energetic. Even better - a good massage will be just what a week full of tough workouts needs.

Little investments for hood health # 13: Buy some basic home workout equipment

We always hear that exercising even for 30 minutes a day will boost the quality of your life. But, most people are unwilling to make that extra time to take better care of their bodies. If you belong to this group of people, then you need to invest in some basic home workout equipment, so that you are never without the means to a good exercise session. Step away from the typical 'buy a treadmill' advice and invest in some basic weights and equipment like resistance bands and a stationary cycle or better still - a simple skipping rope.

Little investments for hood health # 14: Go for a hike

After spending your week tirelessly completing deadline, give yourself a break by checking out weekend vacations that involve outdoor activity. Whether it's a trek to Matheran, a river-side picnic close to Delhi, or a beach mini-vacation near Bangalore, give yourself an outdoor break to liven things up.

Little investments for hood health # 15: Healthy diet

A healthy diet comprises healthy nutrients that you ensure form a major chunk of your meals and snacks. Add loads of fresh vegetables and lean protein to your diet regularly. Make sure you get all the categories of nutrients to maintain good health and state of mind. Never overdo the intake of any kind of food. Limitation of any kind of food is important.

Little investments for hood health # 16: Choose organic food

Prefer un-processed whole food over processed food as far as possible. Picking fresh produce and whole grains will help reduce the consumption of unhealthy processed food that causes obesityand lowered immunity.

Little investments for hood health # 17: Add supplements if your diet is inadequate

If you are not sure of getting enough nutrients in your diet to lead a healthy life, then ask your doctor to prescribe some supplements for you. Extra supplements will help make up for insufficient nutrients. Dr. Sunesara says - never be your own doctor, talk to your doctor before popping any type of health boosting pills.

Little investments for hood health # 18: Join a swimming class

Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise. Join a swimming club or register for a swimming class if you don't know swimming. Swimming at least thrice a week will help to build muscle tone and keep your skeletal structure strong and flexible. Swimming is particularly good for those with bone health issues.

Little investments for hood health # 19: Good quality products

Don't get fooled with cheap skin products. Though it might look appealing, the chemicals used in these products might ruin your skin pH balance. These disturbances can flare up acne on your face and cause permanent skin damage. Hence, always buy good trust-worthy products for good skin.

Little investments for hood health # 20: Fill up your jars with nuts and dry fruits

Consume at least a handful of nuts like almonds and walnuts daily as a snack. Nuts have numerous health benefits and they are quite filling as well. So replace your regular snacks with nuts and dry fruits, and you'll be able to maintain a good intake of essential fatty acids along with snacks that keep you satiated.

Little investments for Good health

No, it is not Aakash, Aakash 2, Aakash 3 or the mythical tablet Moses carried. It is Nexus 7, Google’s first tablet.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about Micromax Canvas HD, terming it the phone to buy if you are looking for an affordable option. Today I am going to talk about Nexus 7, the tablet you should buy if you can’t shell out money for an iPad.

Indian market is full of budget tablets, including a few from Micromax. But all of them leave much to be desired. Some suffer from poor performance. They lag during use. Most of them have poor screens that show dull colours and lack good touch sensitivity. Most of them also have very poor build quality, are unnecessarily heavy and run older versions of Android.

Big companies like Samsung, Huawei and Acer have tried to satisfy demand for affordable tablets but their efforts have not been entirely successful. They often lack the hardware that can make the tablet a joy to use. For example, even Galaxy Tab 2 comes with a graphics chip that is too old to properly run many games available in the Android Play store.

So far, whenever someone asked me for the cheapest tablet to buy, I always pointed out iPad Mini. It is a superb device at a very good price.

All that changed this Tuesday. After a long wait, Google launched Nexus 7 in India.

Nexus 7 is a fantastic tablet at a very good price, Rs 15,999. It is available directly from the Google website. (Go to Play store, log in with your Google ID and you should be able to buy it using a credit or debit card).

I continue to consider iPad Mini a very good option but if you can’t spend Rs 21,900 on it, Nexus 7 is not a bad deal at all.

Consider the hardware, for example. Nexus 7 is powered by quad-core Tegra 3 processor and 1GB RAM. It is a fast device and there is no user interface lag. It handles demanding games well. It has a fantastic IPS screen with 720P resolution and top-notch touch sensitivity. While it lacks the exotic aluminium, the tablet is put together with tough and quality plastic. It feels solid. It comes with a front camera which is decent for video chats and has 16GB internal storage, which may not be very generous but is enough for day-to-day usage. The only downside that I see in Nexus 7 is lack of support for 3G. Google is only selling the Wi-Fi model for now and those who want a budget tablet for internet-on-the-go should still look at Galaxy Tab 2.

While the hardware is good, the real star in Nexus 7 is the software. The device runs the latest version of Android and is guaranteed feature updates for at least one year, directly from Google. The latest version of Android – more commonly known as Jelly Bean – is beautiful, fast and functional. Unlike the modified versions of Android that power tablets from other companies, the untouched Jelly Bean complements Nexus 7 very well.

Another important point to note about Nexus 7 is the content it can access. Compared to Apple, Google has been a little slow in bringing its device and content services to India. But since the beginning of this year, it is making some progress. In February it launched Google Books. Just days after the launch of Nexus 7, it launched Google Movies. The rates for both books and movies are decent. Most books cost between Rs 150 to Rs 300. Classics like Great Expectations and Treasure Island are free. Movies can be rented or bought in SD or HD. The cost is usually between Rs 80 to Rs 450. If you are renting the film, you have to watch it within 30 days. Once you start watching a film, you have to finish it within 2 days. If you buy movies, you can access them from any Android device or any PC using a browser.

There is a possibility that Google Music will also be available in India soon.

The availability of affordable movies and books and the fact that Nexus 7 runs an updated version of Android makes the tablet a fantastic package. It is not perfect yet. I would have loved to see the 3G version of the tablet. But if you have a budget of around Rs 20,000 and can manage without 3G, both iPad Mini and Nexus 7 are great options.

Finally, an affordable tablet you can buy

Samsung Electronics Co on Thursday premiered its latest phone, the Galaxy S4, which sports a bigger display and features such as gesture controls, as the South Korean company takes the fight to iPhone maker Apple Inc.

The phone, the first in Samsung's highly successful Galaxy S-series to make its global debut on U.S. soil, was unveiled to a packed audience at Manhattan's iconic Radio City Music Hall on Thursday evening.

The S4, which Samsung preceded with a marketing blitz that drummed up industry speculation reminiscent of some of Apple's past launches, will be available by the end of April. Samsung said all major U.S. service providers will sell the phone, but kept mum on exact dates and prices.

The latest Galaxy bristles with a host of features not typically found on rivals' phones: it can stop and start videos depending on whether someone is looking at the screen, flip between songs and photos at the wave of a hand, and record sound to run alongside snapped still pictures.

The following is a side-by-side comparison of their physical hardware:
